关系代词用来引导定语从句，它不仅起连接主句和从句的作用，代替主句中作为先行词的名词和代词，并在从句中充当一定的句子成分，有格的变化和指人(who,whom,whose,that,as,but)或指物(which,whose,that,as,but)的区别。

1、关系代词引导定语从句，并在从句中作主语

We must unit all those who can be united. 我们必须团结一切可以团结的人

All is well with him who is beloved of his neighbors. 邻里和气，万事如意。

① 关系代词在定语从句中作主语时，要与其先行词在性、数和人称上保持一致 。

He is a good friend that speaks well of us behind our backs. 背后说好话，才是好朋友。

Those who want to go please sign their names here. 愿意去的人请在这里签名。

② but引导定语从句时，只用于否定结构，意义接近that…not,who…not ,且在定语从句中总是作主语

No one is in the world but knows the Great Wall. 在世界上无人不知道长城。

2、关系代词在定语从句中作宾语(关系代词在从句作宾语时通常被省略)

He is a man (whom )everybody respects. 他是一位受大家尊敬的人。

Do not all (that)you can;spend not all (that) you have; believe not all (that) you hear;and tell not all (that) you know. 做事莫逞强，花钱莫用尽，人言勿全信，说话留三分。

3、关系代词在定语从句中作表语(有时省略)

She is no longer the girl (that) she was I saw her two years before. 她再不是两年前我见过的那个女孩了。

He is a hard-working student, which indeed he is. 他是个勤奋的学生，的确如此。

4、关系代词在定语从句中作定语

Water is a compound whose composition is hydrogen and oxygen. 水是一种化合物，它的成分是氢和氧。
