COVID-19 is the name given to the new coronavirus disease by the World Health Organization (WHO). “COVI” stands for “coronavirus”, “D” is for “disease”, and “19” is for the year the virus appeared. Though the illness is similar to a cold for most people, it can cause death. The disease has had a terrible impact (影响) in China and has spread in manyother countries.

The number of new cases (病例) is falling in China. Chinese businesses and factories are trying to get going again after many have been closed for weeks.

Outside of China, Italy has had a serious coronavirus outbreak. Many areas around the country have been closed. People in those areas have been told to stay at home and are not allowed to travel.

Around the world, large meetings and public gatherings like sports events and concerts are being canceled (取消).

In Japan, the government has closed all schools. Japan is expected to hold the 2020 Olympics this summer, but many people wonder if this will still be possible.

China is ready to offer as much help as it can to countries in need. China’s experience will truly help global victory (胜利) over the novel coronavirus.
