丹・艾克洛德又译丹?艾克罗伊德的祖父是皇家骑警，父亲Peter是政府官员，哥哥是精神病专家。1969年进入渥太华的卡勒顿大学，主修刑事犯罪学和社会学。青年时期的他非常叛逆，曾多次退学，最终在多伦多著名喜剧团体“Second City Stage Troupe”中开始了自己的演艺事业――最初是在一家叫Sock’n’Buskin的校园剧院里。三年后移居美国，75年与谐星吉维蔡斯、比尔墨瑞共同参与著名的深夜电视综艺节目《周末夜现场》，并大受欢迎而演出长达四年之久。其银幕处女作为《1941》，接下来的《福禄双霸天》为其建立了知名度，84年参与编剧并主演的《魔鬼克星》更将他捧为喜剧巨星。89年演出的《温馨接送情》不但在奥斯卡大放异彩，他个人也凭该片入围最佳男配角奖。1994年，他的母校授予他荣誉博士学位。近年仍演出不断。
